Spruce (Tusga canadensi) essential oil This essential oil is a seventh chakra stimulant and is used for being in a grounded, elevated state, and for being sheltered from discordant energy. It also imparts the energy of fortitude and firm self-reliance. In his book, The Meaning of Trees, Fred Hageneder describes some of the energy surrounding this magnificent tree beautifully: "The spruce is also the centre of sacred teachings among the indigenous tribes of southern Canada, who call it the Peace Tree. It's lessons are: to co-operate and exchange with other life forms; to be connected to the earth and the heavens; and to exhibit a joyful and tranquil humility."Tsimshian shamans also use spruce boughs during purification rituals. It is a general belief in most native North American tribes that spruces offers protection from damaging influences.
Birch (Belula nigra) essential oil Birch is used in Native North American sweat-lodge cleansing ceremonies, by tribes such as the Ojibwa, in classical homeobotany, birch has the same effect on the spirit as the living tree has in dreary winter landscapes bringing radiance into the darkness. This tree also enhances the ability to experience beauty and remain calm. Again, from The Meaning of Trees: "Named after the whiteness of its bark, the birch tree shares its name with the ancient Irish goddess Brigid, both names deriving from the Indo-European word bder(e)g, 'shining white'."In Russian folklore the birch itself is called Lady of the Forest. The nourishing, caring birch is an age-old image of the White Goddess, and the Germanic rune Berkana, "birch," stands in part for protection. Another aspect of this graceful tree in early history is the battle goddess. However, it is important to note that as a protectress, she is a defender rather than an aggressor.
